Antique Portrait of Reverend George Crabbe
Product Description
After Thomas Phillips (British, 1770–1845)
Portrait of Reverend George Crabbe (1754–1832)
Oil on Canvas | 19th Century
A distinguished 19th-century oil-on-canvas portrait depicting Reverend George Crabbe (1754–1832), the celebrated English poet, clergyman, and contemporary of Edmund Burke. Painted after the original portrait by renowned British portraitist Thomas Phillips, the work captures Crabbe with a dignified, contemplative presence characteristic of traditional English portraiture.
Crabbe was celebrated for his narrative poetry depicting the realities of rural English life and poverty. His notable works include The Village, The Parish Register, and The Borough, the latter containing the story of Peter Grimes. Lord Byron famously described Crabbe as “nature’s sternest painter, yet the best.”
The original portrait by Thomas Phillips was commissioned by Crabbe’s publisher, John Murray, for his residence at 50 Albemarle Street in London. Another copy was commissioned by Lady Holland, and the composition was later engraved by William Holl Jr. in 1847. The associated Phillips portrait is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Rendered in a wonderfully moody palette of deep blacks and charcoals accented by warm tobacco, ochre, and sienna tones, Crabbe’s silver hair, crisp white cravat, and softly illuminated complexion emerge dramatically from the dark ground. The portrait is presented in a substantial gilt frame with layered molding and delicate decorative detailing, adding warmth and architectural presence.
An exceptional statement piece for a library, study, office, or collected interior, offering the quintessential character of English country house and academia design.
